The former STASI
prison in Höhenschönhausen, in the Eastern outskirts of Berlin,
is now serving as a museum and a memorial. The place is left as it was at
the time it still served as a prison.
It is hard to describe what makes the place so impressive. The interrogation rooms look
bleek, the furniture is feeble and poor. The smell is penetrating,.the environment
is stultifying.
Yet these spaces represent a nation that suppressed and controlled its people 24/7.
