Höhenschönhausen Stasi prison Berlin 2009
The former STASI prison Höhenschönhausen, in the Eastern outskirts of Berlin, is now serving as a museum and a memorial. The place is left as it was at the time it still served as a prison.
It is hard to describe what makes the place so impressive. The interogation rooms look bleek, the furniture is feeble and poor. The smell is penetrating. Yet these spaces represent a system that surpressed and controlled its people 24/7.
Inmates were not able to orient themselves where they were located in the building. These photographs mainly show details, to envision the impact of the limited view to grasp information about the environment.
