Ontmantelde teruggeplaatst / Dismantled returned 2011

December 31, 2003, both the Stedelik Museum of contemporary art and the Royal Theatre Carre closed their doors for a thorough renovation. This was the beginning of a peculiar chapter in the history of Amsterdam. Many cultural Palaces underwent renovation or started new constructionwork. From this moment, Jan Theun Van Rees has been photographing many of these sites. (see portfolio 'Dismantled Spaces').
Now that this remarkable chapter in the history of Amsterdam is coming to a close, mr. Van Rees has returned to the places that he has photographed. Life-sized prints from his image archive were placed in the same spaces, which he then photographed again in situ. This is how Dismantled returned came into being, photographs within photographs, which represent the current situation while capturing a moment in history at the same time.

Op 31 december 2003, sloten zowel het Stedelijk Museum als Koninklijk Theater Carre hun deuren voor een ingrijpende verbouwing. Dit ws het begin van een merkwaardig hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van Amsterdam. Menig cultureel paleis onderging verbouwing of pleegde nieuwbouw. Vanaf het begin heb ik veel instellingen gefotografeerd (zie portfolio 'Dismantled spaces').
Nu dit merkwaardige hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van de stad bijna is afgesloten, is Van Rees teruggekeerd naar de plekken die hij sinds 2004 heeft gefotografeerd. Levensgrote afdrukken uit zijn beeldarchief plaatste hij terug in dezelfde ruimten om ze in situ opnieuw te fotograferen. Zo ontstond Ontmanteld teruggeplaatst, een foto in een foto, die de huidige situatie toont in combinatie met een moment uit het verleden.
